Earthquakes, Wave Energy and Tsunamis

Here are some activities we did to study earthquakes, and how wave energy works. Click the small pictures to see the bigger pictures.

Slinkies are great things. They can be used to demonstrate the types of energy waves that earthquakes generate.

Here is an "S" wave. An "S" is a wave bouncing in the shape of an "S".

The box of cards in the background of this picture were used to further simulate the effects of an earthquake

Sometimes earthquakes occur under the ocean. When that happens, a wave motion is created in the water. This is call a "tsunami", and can be demonstrated in miniature by using a pan of water and floating dominos. The dominos were placed on top of a lid, and when the water was shaken, the dominos fell over.
