World's Tallest Buildings

Very comprehensive site. Choose from traditional buildings over 1000 feet in height. Uses elevator buttons to lead visitors through the site. "Today's Tallest Buildings" floor provides a chart with rank, location, height and other interesting data. "The Observatory" takes visitors to over 40 buildings by clicking a thumbnail photo. While each building link is a surprise, most have photos, a wealth of technical information, and related articles written about the building. This floor also includes 5 observatory webcam links. The "Projects" floor, uses color codes to organize buildings in-progress or never built with latest technical information and updates. World's Tallest Buildings is packed with written material such as newspaper and magazine articles, and goes deep with links. Fabulous general resource on tall buildings.

Great Buildings Collection

An excellent building data site. Featuring "more than 750 great buildings from around the world and across history", visitors can choose from an alphabetical list of buildings. Each building link includes the building statistics, dates, materials, style, architectural drawings, photographs, views from the top, 3D models, information about the architect, a bibliography, and discussion. Easy to use.

Nalyd's Skyscraper Page

Wonderful resource site for skyscrapers around the world. Many building pictures, skylines, and aerials. It includes a link to The World's Tallest Diagram, a nice visual for size comparison. Great resource, many links.

Chicago on Tour

Fifteen buildings and skyscrapers are featured on this cybertour of Chicago created in cooperation with the Chicago Architectural Foundation. The tour begins with a map of the city dotted with the selected tour sites and a site list. Each building link includes an excellent photo of the building, detailed data about building statistics, and an excellent text. Student friendly.

The Great Chicago Fire

This site is a wonderful on-line exhibit from the Chicago Historical Society on the Chicago Fire. It is full of essays photographs, and primary documents relating to the fire. Essays include insight into pre and post fire Chicago, ordinances and building codes and their violations, and lots of other information about the structure andlife of the city before and after the fire.

The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum is located at 44 Wall St. in NYC. Net visitors can take a virtual tour of the museum. This site includes useful information on the rational for building skyscrapers, impact on land values in the city, problems and solutions in building, and modificatons to interior space. Topics are covered briefly. Visitors can also take a cyber-tour of the latest special exhibit, "The Empire State Building".

This site claims to be, "one of the most complete high-rise data bases on the web." It lists and can send visitors to six continents, 107 cities, and 755 buildings.

About 30 buildings are featured. There are photos and some basic statistical information about each.

Great Structures of the World

This site invites visitors to choose from six regions around the world to visit famous structures from the Hoover Dam in the American southwest, to the Eurotunnel connecting France and England, to the super-tall Petronas Twin Towers in Asia, and many more interesting structures. Text, structure statistics, and photos are included.

Interesting site with some different information. Disaster Time provides information on what happens if . . ., Hollywood High-Rises discusses tall buildings featured in the movies, Reaching for the Skies tells which structure is tallest where, Tall Over the World takes visitors to 121 building links in 21 countries, and more.

Useful site for information on tall buildings in this city. Includes photographs and some basic data.

Moscow Skyline

This site includes six photographs of the Moscow skyline, no text. It is part of a web series by journalist Steven R. Van Hook.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Web site on master American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. It is also the Web companion to the Ken Burns film, "Frank Lloyd Wright". This site features biographical info, in-depth information about Wright buildings, his contemporaries, and 20th century architecture.

Lewis Wickes Hine Exhibit

This is an on-line exhibit of the photographer commissioned to capture the construction of the Empire State Building in photos. It is part of the New York Public Library web collection. It includes photographs, extensive data about the building costs, construction, and work force.

Ranger Dave's Monument Tour (The Washington Monument)

This student friendly site provides monument statistics, a history that includes easy to read timelines, information on Egyptian obelisks, clear and varied photographs, and links. This is part of the National Park Service's Web collection.

Eiffel Tower

This is the official site of the Eiffel Tower. All of the statistical information about the structure is available along with Eiffel Tower history, photographs, some fun activities such as a virtual look at the elevator ride and an opportunity to repaint the tower.

Sears Tower Web Site

A short section on building construction is available along with building facts and a timeline that begins with the original Mr. Sears but is somewhat difficult to read. There are photographs without captions.

Transamerica Pyramid

Useful but brief information about this structure in downtown San Francisco. This site includes great views from the top and building facts.

Art Deco Architecture

Art Deco in American life is the theme of this, apparently, student-created site. It features three buildings, The Empire State Building, The Collins Park Hotel, in Miami, and the Chrysler Building. A photo and brief text about each building in included.
