Sim City 2000 can be
a focus for an entire integrated science and social
studies unit. In the course of the city unit the
children may participate in the following lessons
and activities:
- View satellite
photos of Boston and New York City and try to
identify major landmarks such as airport,
stadiums, train stations, schools. parks and
hospitals.
- Construct a mural
of cities of around the world using photos cut
out from National Geographic.
- Research and list
50 major United States cities.
- Research and list
50 major World cities.
- Research and list
the 10 most populated cities in the United
States.
- Construct and
manage your own city using Sim City 2000.
- Research and
write a history of an important American city.
- Write a history
of your own Sim City.
- Read David
Macually's "Underground".
- Take a field trip
to New York City or some other nearby major
city.
- Take a field trip
to town facilities like the sewage treatment
plant, the water department, a hospital, City
Hall or some other municipal
building.
- Research how
skyscrapers are built
- Design your own
skyscraper and build it.
- Research how
tunnels are built.
- Debate the need
for a new convention center in a nearby
city.
- Discuss life in
the City - What are the Pros and
Cons?
- Think about the
future of cities -Discuss what will happen in
the future?
- Research the
history of transportation in the
city.
- Research the
history of energy use in the city.
- Watch the News -
Tape a broadcast from Springfield, Hartford and
Boston or some other local city. How are the
programs similar and how are they different?
