An airplane is a thing of beauty in flight. It looks graceful. It looks like it is supposed to be up there flying. A bird in flight is graceful as it moves its wings and its feathers in flight. An airplane in flight relies on its wings. Wings are made for flying.
An airfoil is any surface that provides a lifting force when a flow of air passes around it. Below is a drawing of an airfoil. You can see the path of the airflow over the airfoil.
