Forces Working Together

by Paul and Veronica; Grade 4

Newton's Third Law of Motion states; for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction.

The balloon shows Newton's third law, the balloon is at rest and will stay at rest unless some force acts on it.

A common mistake is when people think that a rocket blast pushes against something to provide thrust. THIS IS WRONG!

Out in space there is nothing to push against. When the fuel exits the rocket this alone causes the movement. The fuel in a rocket or a jet airplane is full of stored energy (potential). When the fuel is ignited, it burns with oxygen. This causes the gases to expand just like a balloon expands. The nozzle controls the flow of gases out of the back. Now the fuel is converted to the energy of motion(Kinetic).
