PUBLIC SCIENCE DAY

THE WEATHER

The entire Rhawnhurst School Family is participating in this science adventure. We are quite proud at Rhawnhurst to have been chosen by The Franklin Institute to participate in this wonderful program. We have embarked enthusiastically in this endeavor from the very outset. We have received a grant of $5,000 approved for science materials and staff development. Also, our school received a $1000 grant as a result of the submission of our proposal to participate in Public Science Day. The funds are being utilized to purchase science kits for all grade levels on the weather.

Although Rhawnhurst is a rather small school population wise, without the services of a science specialist, we pride ourselves on seeking excellence in all academic and social areas. Rhawnhurst is a kindergarten through fifth grade organization.

We have successfully endeavored to combine the School District's standards, benchmarks, and performance criteria with our weather project. The unit on weather was selected because it interfaced beautifully with our School District guides. Additionally, Rhawnhurst was invited to the Franklin Institute for Public Science Day, which houses a weather station among its other outstanding features. Thus far, we have actively utilized the internet extensively to obtain data on weather conditions in our area and other areas throughout the world that would have similar weather conditions. We are looking for differences that may result from pollution and climate changes, the greenhouse effect, the ozone layer and acid rain. Teachers are utilizing kits on weather watching, weather instruments, and weather stations with their children. The scientific process as related to our weather investigations has been inspiring.

Rhawnhurst is grateful to all those very special people who have contributed to inspire our desire to make the study of Science more meaningful then ever.
