Mayfair School

The Mayfair School held a "Student Pride Night" on April 23,
1998, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. As part of the display, the
students from the Streamwater Club set up their display from
"Scientists in the City" and were available to explain water
use to parents, students, and other community members, as
well as what they had learned during the year. People were
impressed, and many said they had learned more about
conservation of water, too. Others even made verbal
commitments to be more careful and try to conserve water in
the future.
Six members of the Streamwater Club successfully represented our school in the Philadelphia County ECO-MEET, sponsored by numerous organizations including PECO Energy Company, The Schuylkill Center, The Philadelphia Water Department, The Academy of Natural Sciences, and The Philadelphia Zoo. The event took place on May 5, between the Academy and The Fairmount Water Works.
An ECO-MEET is similar to an Olympic event, with the focus on ecology and the environment. The members had prepared for several weeks and were selected based on their club attendance, behavior, and continued interest in the club's activities. They were: Thomas Woods, Jason Blair, Nathaniel Lewis, Brooke Asman-Rm, Kevin Welsh, and Sharde Washington. The team competed against nine other middle-level schools from around Philadelphia: Penn Treaty, Beeber, Clemente, St. Anselm, Overbrook Educational Center, Wanamaker, Charles Drew, Fitz-Simons, and Wagner. The students were told at the end of the meet that they had been given high school material that was used in a prior competition! All participants received a trophy and a T-shirt, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places also received a trophy. The students discussed the problems and questions in the meet cooperatively and came to some excellent conclusions. Some of them asked if they could come back next year (two are graduating!). Hopefully some new students will want to go next year, too.
During the next few days of class, the students typed up a summary of their day for the school newspaper. To celebrate the club's conclusion for the year, we had a video/pizza party for all the club members on Thursday, May 7, 1998. The activities and events the students participated in this year were wonderful opportunities for them to brainstorm, cooperate, and meet other students in the Philadelphia area. It was a learning experience for everyone; students learned quite a bit about water, and the real way it gets to our homes--not just "from the tap." We have heard stories about the Wastewater Treatment Plant, so we plan to make a trip there in the next year!
