Apple of My Eye

Our Class

Ms. Shell
Third Grade

The history of America is tied up with phrases that relate to apples. Some phrases you might be familar with are: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. As American as Apple pie and the one that expresses love and affection Apple of my Eye. The third grade students at Levering school had a chance to pick the apple of their eye by doing an experiment by tasting various types of apples.

This experiment was a tasty way of also teaching them the scientific method. First the students developed a hypothesis (a scientific way of saying a guess ) Then they observed and recorded data about their apples drawing and measuring each of the seven kinds presented. The students then tasted each apple with drinks of water in between to clear their palate. The children had to describe the apples differences in taste. Then they had to pick the type of apple they liked the best. They then graphed the results of the apples they liked the best.

The next step for the Apple of my Eye experiment was to get other people in the community to write what their favorite apples were. Levering school is conviently located across the street from the Acme markets. Acme graciously accepted to display the students work. When the students visited Acme they were greeted by the produce manager and the store manager. The store and produce manager gave them a tour of the produce section and told them about their jobs. Afterwards the children were treated to fresh apples, apple cider and ginger snaps. A great time was had by the students in room eight and their teacher Mrs. Shell. The children will use the information collected about apples on the computer internet. to share with other students around the country.

Levering school is celebrating it's 250 th anniversary and this is one of many experiments going on in the school highlighting the partnership between Levering School and The Franklin Institute.
