Mr. Cooper's Nature Walk

Norman Cooper
Seventh Grade Science Teacher

On Friday, October l7, 1997 30 students from the seventh grade along with 20 students from Mrs. Peterman's 5th grade class went on a trip to the Schulykill Valley Nature Center.

Upon arrival we were divided up into groups of l2 and given given a guide. Our guide's name was Mary who was a graduate student from Beaver College in Environmental Education. Students were allowed to explore nature trails in search of plants, insects, and signs of animals.

We were given guide books with pictures of all the above and the students were asked to identify all the different plants, animals and insects they could recognize. The one receiving the most would receive a prize. Students were very eager to be out in the fresh air and have this opportunity to interact with nature in an area so close to the city.

All kinds of animals, plants and little wiggly things were encountered on our journey. There was minor supervision needed on my part as a teacher because students were very comfortable working independently.

The opportunity for students to receive hands-on activities were unlimited and we do plan to make a visit back in the spring when the leaves start to turn green again.

All teachers in the area owe it to themselves to take their class (as Gilligan would say) on a two hour tour. We have been working on lessons derived from our trip for a week and have been able to decorate our hall with some of the scenes and items found.

Looking forward to the next trip.
