Energy In Our World
A Cooperative Science/Technology Project

Energy In Our World is a
thematic unit, developed by Paula Don, Technology Coordinator and
Mary Pat Garvey, Science Teacher Leader, as part of our
participation in the SCIENTIST IN THE CITY project. This
project commemorated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science, which
was established in Philadelphia in
1848.
Public Science
Day marked the opening of the AAAS conference on February
12, 1998. Participating schools, 22 throughout the city,
developed science units which looked at our city as a wonderful
science laboratory, filled with interesting concepts, ideas, and
challenges to be explored.
Public
Science Day in Philadelphia was a collaboration between AAAS and
The Franklin Institute, with sponsorship by Unisys Corporation.
This important collaboration provided an opportunity for thousands
of students to experience scientific inquiry through months of
investigation and experimentation. Visit the Scientist in the
City web site to see more of what was going on throughout our
area.
Here at Childs School,
students in grades K and 1 published a book about healthy foods
that give us energy. You can read the book right here on this
page!
Students in Grade 4
created simulations of energy resources using MicroWorlds. You
can see pictures of their worlds by clicking
below!
Students from K-4 grade
built vehicles using LEGO materials. With financial help from a
grant from PEF we built balloon cars, solar cars and LEGO cars! We
tested our cars and collected data about their distance, speed and
weight. We then compared and analyzed the data on our computers.
It was a lot of fun!
