Student Displays Student Displays Student Displays

Ten thousand students from twenty-two schools in the School District of Philadelphia celebrated Public Science Day, an annual event organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), by visiting informal science institutions in the city. Ten of those schools visited The Franklin Institute for the day and shared their interpretations of what it means to be "scientists in the city" of Philadelphia. All year, teachers and students have been investigating the science that surrounds their school. One school, the Levering School, decided to investigate "Roxborough Science," by taking an in-depth look at the science of their neighborhood.

On Public Science Day, the Levering School community visited The Franklin Institute and displayed some of their investigations. The day was a chance to highlight what they have learned about being scientific every day.

Below, you can follow along with Mrs. Selby and her sixth grade students as they spent the day at the Museum.

In the museum

When Mrs. Selby's group arrived at the Museum, they went to visit some of the exhibits. In "Changing Earth," Mrs. Selby reminded the students about their weather science investigations and compared what they had learned with what they saw in the exhibit.

The student presentations

Mrs. Selby and her sixth grade students had investigated electricity in their homes and neighborhood. They prepared an "electricity prescription" with their ideas for saving electricity in their neigborhood.

Award Ceremony

Later, the Levering School received a certificate of appreciation for participating in Public Science Day and for being "scientists in the city" of Philadelphia.

Videoconference

Mrs. Selby's class was invited to participate in a live videoconference with a group of students in London, England who were also celebrating Public Science Day. Mrs. Selby's students asked about how electricity works in neighborhoods in London, and the English students asked questions about gardening in the city, which was the focus of their investigation.

School pride

Mrs. Selby and the entire Levering School community worked hard all year long on their "scientists in the city" projects. Their school pride really shows!

End of a great day!

At the end of a great day, the students head for their buses to make their way back to Levering.
