The signature program for young leaders in science is PACTS
(Partnerships for Achieving Careers in Technology and Science). PACTS
is a year-round youth leadership experience, designed to involve students
as an integral part of The Franklin Institute. PACTS combines science enrichment, field-based research,
career development, and leadership opportunities for diverse
middle school and high school students in the Philadelphia region. There are two primary strands of PACTS science and technology learning available to students throughout the year: Field-based research and laboratory-based activities in environmental science; and robotics, with a particular focus on the design, building, and operation of robots for the regional LEGO Robot Challenge. Exceptional PACTS students are invited to become Explainers, who work in the museum both in volunteer and paid capacities. Throughout the year, Explainers serve as the PACTS leadership team in the design and hosting of major Institute annual events, including Careers in Science Day, the Meet the Scientists forum, and Earth Day. PEERS (PACTS Environmental Education, Research and Service) 2002—2005 The PEERS project has extended the PACTS focus on environmental science through research on Centennial Lake in Fairmount Park. PEERS students have conducted field-based research on the lake biome as a natural laboratory, in collaboration with Fairmount Park and the Philadelphia Water Department. PEERS students have also used their findings to engage the public about environmental issues. Partnerships for Achieving Careers in Technology and Science 19931996 PACTS began as a community-based program for African-American students, grades 7-12, to provide science enrichment, adult mentoring, and college and career counseling. Since the original project ended, PACTS has evolved to become the signature youth program of The Franklin Institute for diverse young leaders in science. Student Leadership in Science 19972001 Student Leadership in Science initiated a program of environmental research by PACTS students at Centennial Lake in Fairmount Park. Exploration of the Centennial Lake biome has been sustained as a year-round focus of student exploration and engagement of the Institute's visiting public.Regional Robot Contest 2000ongoing PACTS staff and Explainers host an annual LEGO Mindstorms robot contest for regional teams of middle-school students, their coaches, and families. The PACTS robot team has extended the PACTS experience to students, grades 4-8. |
