I'm Cristina, and I'm a computer systems
administrator. I have my own company that manages
Internet servers. I provide services such as website
management, email, dealing with domain names, and other
Internet services for a variety of clients. It's my job to
look for ways to monitor and maintain systems so that they
don't break and so that they can be fixed quickly if they
do.
I manage operating systems, and an operating system is basically what makes computer hardwareall of the internal parts of a computerwork. In order to have a really useful operating system that has many users, you need a systems administrator, and that's me. I haven't always been a "computer person." I took a few computer science classes in high school and college, but I didn't expect to make a career out of it. As a matter of fact, I went through three failed careers before I got into computers professionally. It was my interest in Buckminster Fuller--a philosopher, inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, cosmologist, and more--that sent me in the direction of computers. Bucky (as he's called by his admirers) inspired me to think more deeply about math and philosophy, which were the formal paths I took to help me develop my critical thinking skills. Critical thinking led me back to math and computers. And critical thinking skills are essential in being a good computer systems administrator. |
