If you're serious about becoming a medicinal chemist, you should know that it will be essential for you to study advanced level synthetic chemistry. To build your foundations of chemistry knowledge, you should choose it as a major in college, where you'll take a wide variety of chemistry classes. As I said before, you'll probably be able to become a chemist after obtaining a bachelor's or master's degree, but in order to really plan your own research, you should consider getting a Ph.D. And of course, lab experience is crucial.
